Alternative Sicily - Your DMC in Sicily

March 2010

Dear Sir/Dear Madam,

2010 could be the year to discover Sicily, the Mediterranean’ s real jewel. Not just to see its history and culture with one’s own eyes, but also because of its long list of possible activities which are linked to the MICE (Meetings, Incentive, Congresses and Events) market. As a local DMC (Destination Management Company), Alternative never surrenders. It is constantly searching for exclusive and innovative activities to be added to the ones already existing, in order to offer its clients the best. Here are just a few of them: from sailing boat races to excursions on board old time trains around the slopes of the Etna, from the discovery of the underground canals of Palermo to jet-skiing on an Eolian island ... and, last but not least, a gala event in a wonderful 'Tonnara' on the sea.

We are pleased to refer you to our website www.alternativesicily.com, or click here to download a high-quality presentation of Sicily and our services. You are free to contact us if you want to organize a tour, incentive or conference/meeting in Sicily. We would be pleased to elaborate you a tailor-made offer.

The Alternative Sicily team,

In this Newsletter:

New Verdure Golf Resort - Rocco Forte collection - *****

Last year Sicily was enriched by the grand opening of one of Europe’s most prestigious Resorts, Verdura Resort (Rocco Forte Collection).

Located on the shores of the Mediterranean sea, with its kilometric beach, the Resort offers quality and exclusiveness: 203 rooms and luxury furnished suites, each one offering a beautiful view over the sea and a terrace or a private balcony, two 18-hole golf courses, one 9-hole course and a pool, which is longer than olympic-size swimming pool thanks to its 60 metres dominating the below Mediterranean Sea. A spacy prestige beauty centre and a professional congress centre. There is no need to convince your clients. The Resort says it all: luxury and relax, all in one area which is still natural and rich in history and culture.

Your incentive in Sicily will obviously not just be the Hotel, but whatever can make this holiday a special one will be taken care by Alternative Sicily: cultural and sports activities (scooter tours, karting, sailing boat races, treasure-hunts or geocaching) together with wine tasting and a local cuisine workshop and to end, a gala dinner in one of the many ancient suburbs of the area.

Authenticity, surprise and quality are the ingredients of our 'West Sicily suggestion: salt, sea and culture'

Special transport: the Fiat 500 'cinquecento' vintage car

This no doubt that the small Fiat cinquecento reminds of a meaningful history and about a sense of liberty, about a part of history which has certainly marked Italy as well.

Your clients will be able to relive this experience by driving one of the 12 vintage cars available. A once in a life time experience which could bring the client on the trail of the Godfather, a cult film by Francis F. Coppola. A stop at the 'Godfather villa' for a coffee break is a must, followed by a pizza workshop at a local pizza place and an afternoon visit to one of the little upland towns, a place which was chosen to film several of the movie’s scenes.

Or, if equipped with a road book and maps, clients can discover the Sicilian hinterland away from tourist routes, projected in other times and rhythms.

Why not customizing the event and offering the client a foulard or a 50’s flat cap?

Mountainbike: Half-tour of the Etna at about 1800m height

It is one of the most exciting experiences you can offer in Sicily, suggested for the sport lovers of the group.

By following the so-called “trazzera altomontana” mountain road (a dirt road used by foresters and volcanologists to monitor the volcano), you can take a half-tour of the Etna with a breathtaking view surrounding it, through lava flows and woods full of pine trees, beech-trees and oaks, with a short visit at lava running caves and then stop and have lunch at one of the huts along the road.

If you are looking for an activity that offers a strong impact and is very suggestive, this means you may have found it!

GALA venue in old tuna station

Follow Brad Pitt and Cathering Zeta-Jones’s footmarks in one of Sicily’s 'Tonnare', a spectacular place for organizing exclusive lunches and dinners for your group. As a matter of fact, the final scenes of the movie 'Oceans Twelve' were filmed at one of these corners of paradise on earth.

The “tonnare” are huge structures which were used for processing the tunas that were fished in those seas, an important source of income for the island. After the end of the tuna fishing adventures, stories which just become memories of the past, today the tonnara is an ideal place for a gala dinner in a spot which used to belong fisherman .... And if the sea, the lord of the Island allows those little wooden boats, an ancient memory of the past, to dock at the small port which was carved in the rocks, then you won’t want to miss that ride too.
